May 2017- A Royal Visit to the Paignton Picture House
HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex visited Paignton Picture House on Wednesday, May 3 to meet some of the volunteers and trustees who started the project in 2013 to reinvigorate one of the oldest and most important historic cinemas in the UK. The trustees and volunteers are trying to raise £2million to be able to reopen it to the public. The aims of the original Directors back in 1915 was ‘to produce a picture house distinctly superior to any of the provincial houses’ and it advertised itself as ‘the coolest house in Paignton’ due to its early take-up of electric lighting and air conditioning.
It welcomed many locals through its doors including the international crime writing icon Agatha Christie. Sadly, with the rise of the modern multiplex, Paignton Picture House closed its doors in 1999 and sat dormant without a role in our community.
The Royal visit was warmly welcomed by the Picture House and highlighted the amount of work and funding to be able to open their doors once more. Tours and visits can be arranged and if you would like to get involved then you can email firstname.lastname@example.org or log onto www.paigntonpicturehouse.org for more information.

July 2017 – Prudential RideLondon
Prudential RideLondon is a world-class festival of cycling. The fifth edition will take place over the weekend of 28-30 July 2017.
The event is managed by the London & Surrey Cycling Partnership (LSCP), a partnership between London Marathon Events Limited (owners and operators of the London Marathon since 1981) and SweetSpot Group Limited (operators of the Tour of Britain).
There is no other closed-road event like it that combines the fun and accessible element of a free family ride in central London with the excitement of watching the world’s best professional cyclists race.
Taking a cue from the London Marathon, amateur cyclists also participate in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 – a 100-mile challenge on the same closed roads as the professionals, with the added incentive of raising money for good causes. Newton Abbot estate agent Steve Green will be taking part in this event raising money for Children with Cancer. Steve has been training hard for this event and so far via his Virgin Money Giving fund he has raised £445. If you would like to donate towards this good cause, then please do so by clicking the link.
Best of luck Steve!!

March 2017 – Update
Darren and Graham broke the World Record and played for outstanding 106 hours to secure the title. They raised a fantastic £8,100!!!
Out of this World!!
On Wednesday, February 22 Darren Stocks and Graham Cuthbert are attempting the Guinness World Record for continuously playing pool. The event is to be held at The Bell Inn in Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot in aid of Rowcroft Hospice, a much needed and underfunded charity in Torquay.
So far, they have already raised £4000.
The current World Record was set in 2013 at 100 Hours and is held in Colorado and ideally their effort in bringing this record to Devon and raising money for Rowcroft would of course be enhanced by more people being made aware of such an event.
The start time is 12noon on Wednesday, February 22 and they will be breaking the record at 4pm on Sunday, February 26. Although, of course they are aiming to stop at 9pm to reach 105 hours of continuously play.
If you would like to sponsor, then please do not hesitate to contact Darren on 077862 70900 for further details.
February 2017 – Fresh Dental Challenge Atlantic
Two rowers, 3000 nautical miles, one boat, 4 oars and they’ve done it!!
Two local dentists, Justin Marney (also a member of the Royal Dart Yacht Club) and Azud Irshad, have taken on and completed the challenge of rowing over 3000 nautical miles across the width of the world’s second largest ocean, the Atlantic.
After an incredible 51 days 11 hours and 35 minutes, Justin and Azud rowed in to English Harbour with flares, music and huge cheers on Friday, February 3.
They’re immensely proud of their achievement, plus they have also managed to raise £11,260 so far for Rowcroft and money is still coming in.
Crossing the Atlantic is never an easy undertaking, but people have been making the journey for hundreds of years.
But some daring people choose to cross the Atlantic to test the limit of their physical and mental strength; to achieve something unthinkable.
It’s no surprise then that more people have been into space, or climbed Everest than have rowed the Atlantic. It takes a certain kind of person to keep going when faced with blisters, salt rash, sharks and sleep deprivation.
That’s why the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is the world’s toughest row, congratulations to Justin and Azud from all of us at Darnells!!
Proud Sponsor of Torquay Cricket Club
Welcome to the online home of Torquay Cricket Club. Please take a little while to find your way around our website; and get to know something of our culture, values; and people.
Torquay Cricket Club has a proud and rich history; and ever since we were founded in 1851, we have endeavoured to play cricket with a competitive edge but always fairly and in the true spirit of the game. 2015 proved a landmark year in our journey, as all three of our senior sides won their respective leagues; and, hence, we go into the 2016 campaign as Champions of the Devon Premier League.
As you might expect, we celebrate this success and strive every season to be the best we can be; but we are equally proud to be ‘Clubmark’ accredited. This means we are recognised as actively seeking to foster and promote participation in cricket in Torquay in a safe, child friendly environment where everyone is welcome irrespective of their age, gender or ethnicity.
While we hope you enjoy our online offering, there is no substitute to savouring the experience for yourself; and so we extend a warm invitation to come and visit us in Torquay: a vibrant seaside town, set in a UNESCO global geopark; and often referred to as the English Riviera.
Our ground, affectionately known as “The Rec”, nestles just off the sea front along the so-called “Agatha Christie Mile”, adjacent to the Grand Hotel and railway station. It occupies an idyllic setting; and offers easy access, parking close to the action; and plenty of famous Devon hospitality in our distinctive pavilion. For the aspiring cricketer, our net facilities are among the newest and best in the South West; and we have a cohort of qualified and enthusiastic coaches keen to pass on their knowledge and experience.
So, if you want to play or watch cricket; or wish to become involved in a great Club with a family atmosphere, then please – come and join us!

One of the best equipped Clubs in the South West, DTARC has an excellent range of facilities – with over 35 boats for Club members’ use and racking for over 25 private boats.
